Opening Scene: When Pain Dominates
When she arrived, she was in near-constant pain. Driving, sitting, even carrying her purse triggered nerve pain down her leg. Acupuncture brought brief reprieve, but relief would fade within days. Her sleep was fractured, her nervous system wired, and her meals inconsistent. She’d lost weight during the pandemic and now described feeling cold “almost all the time.”
Phase 1 — Stabilize the Terrain
- Nutrients: magnesium glycinate, zinc, B-complex, omega-3s, vitamin D
- Anti-inflammatory kitchen: turmeric honey paste
- Structure: high-protein breakfast; protein and vegetables at each meal
- Nervous system: gentle daytime nervine; PRN sleep/pain support tinctures
Within two weeks, her pain dropped dramatically.
By the first follow-up she was “99% better,” walking daily again, sleeping through the night, and no longer fearful of movement.
Her vitality returned quickly once core nutrients and rhythm were restored.
Phase 2 — The Curveball
Two months later, she developed new symptoms: swollen eyelids and dark circles that worsened overnight.
We explored every hypothesis—baking class and gluten exposure, mold or VOCs from her new home, even histamine intolerance.
None shifted the pattern.
Her inflammation and mood remained stable, so I knew we were missing a key variable.
Phase 3 — The Breakthrough
An ophthalmologist finally traced the symptom back to her new oral contraceptive, Tri-Mili (ethinyl estradiol/norgestimate), known to cause edema in sensitive individuals.
She discussed a lower-dose option with her prescriber, and we added gentle estrogen-metabolizing support: vitamin B6, magnesium, zinc, and cruciferous vegetables to help her system clear excess hormones.
Outcomes
| System | Result |
| Back pain | Resolved (0/10) |

Clinical Reflection
This case reminded me how rapidly pain can resolve when the terrain is repleted.
Magnesium, zinc, EFAs, and protein corrected months of deficiency and tension.
But it also underscored that not every new symptom is a new imbalance. Sometimes it’s a side effect.
Her willingness to engage both Vitalist and conventional care allowed the full picture to come into view.
What This Case Teaches
- Rhythm beats intensity. Healing happens through steady nourishment and consistency, not heroics.
- Medication reviews matter. Always revisit new prescriptions when unexpected symptoms appear.
- Education builds adherence. When clients understand why, they follow through with ease.
